As the Wealth, So the Food ! (Nikki Kahani)
“Just as you eat, so becomes your mind.”
The old man said this while breaking a piece of bread.
Harvinder immediately asked,
“Baba ji, that sounds right… but with what money was this food bought?”
The old man stopped with the bread halfway to his mouth.
“Son, you have turned a simple meal into an income-tax investigation!”
Everyone laughed.
Harvinder smiled.
“No, Baba ji. I am serious. Food doesn’t simply come from the kitchen or farms. It is bought with money. And then the question becomes—what kind of money or what source of money bought that food?”
The old man nodded.
“That's the real question. If the money was earned by cheating someone, taking a bribe, grabbing someone’s rightful share, or exploiting someone’s helplessness, then how can the food bought with it bring health or peace to the mind?”
Harvinder laughed,
“So before checking what’s on the plate, we should check what’s behind the wallet?”
The old man chuckled.
“Exactly! Sometimes the food is cooked in pure ghee, but the money behind that ghee may have been squeezed out of someone else’s rights!”
Then Harvinder remembered a teaching from the Bible:
“Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.”
— Proverbs 13:11
The old man said,
“That is the point. Honest earning may be slow, but it gives something money alone cannot buy—peace of mind.”
Harvinder picked up his last piece of bread and said,
“So it isn't only—
‘As the food, so the mind.’
We should also ask—
‘As the wealth, so the food…
and as the wealth, so the mind.’”
The old man smiled.
“Now eat your bread. If you keep investigating the money behind every bite, the bread will become cold!”
Everyone laughed.
The bread was hot, but the thought went straight to the heart and make it cool.
